Introducing our new series: 'Deconstructing the Postcard: Cities of Latin America'
A new series that reveals the hidden reality of the picture-perfect postcard
Welcome to our new series that challenges the glossy, picture-perfect images of Latin America's most iconic cities and picturesque small towns, revealing the social, economic, and political realities that lie beneath.
While travel guides and social media often present these places through an idealised lens—vibrant street life, colonial charm, breathtaking landscapes—this series interrogates the forces shaping urban spaces, from gentrification and housing crises to informal economies and the persistence of structural inequalities. By peeling back the layers of tourism-driven narratives, Deconstructing the Postcard invites readers to see Latin American cities and towns not just as destinations but as lived spaces shaped by history, policy, and social struggle.
By adopting a social justice lens, the series encourages a deeper, more critical engagement with the hemisphere, helping readers understand how urban transformation, inequality, and resilience intersect in ways often invisible to the casual visitor.
The series will run over the course of the next few months and will cover most countries in the hemisphere. We kickstart it today with one of the most iconic city of Latin America: Medellín, Colombia 🇨🇴
Stay tuned and dont’t miss our next post
Great idea! However, the pic looks like Guanajuato and the Medellin article is missing.
