The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 and the upsurge in violence by criminal gangs have caused thousands of deaths and pushed the country to the brink.

But its evils have deeper roots, some of which date back to the birth of Haiti as an independent nation, and which have become entrenched over the centuries.
